Nigerian flag under british rule

• The British started their colonization with Nigeria in the early 1600’s.
• They established posts and forts in the Nigerian coast for trading.
• By 1672 the British established the Royal African Company.
• By the French Revolution the British became a dominant commercial power in West Africa.
• The British started exporting slaves in the early 1800’s to all over the Atlantic.
• They traded slaves for goods, like oil, manufacturing goods, and palm oil.
• When Lagos became a crown colony, they made it so the French wouldn’t take over Lagos and their trading coast.
• So they established it in the British name.
• By 1906 Nigeria was now a British colony.
